How to Become a CEO

If you’re in the corporate world and have dreams of climbing all the way to the top of the corporate ladder, you’re not alone. Running or owning a company is a big part of the American dream. To be a CEO you need excellent communication skills and listening skills. You also need a good educational foundation. An MBA is best but many have made it through years of experience and informal training. Climbing up the corporate ladder also requires great networking and interpersonal skills. Don’t forget those you leave behind and treat your peers with respect. Make strong connections through your field, and not just those above or on the same playing field as you. The impressions you make on people as your career progresses will stay with them forever. Make sure they benefit you, not haunt you.

Work hard and stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons. Seize opportunities and be as productive as possible. Show that you are a team player and know how to work with others. Keep up on industry news and read biographies of successful CEOs in your field and beyond. Be sure to look at CEOs that were not so successful so you can learn from their mistakes too. Don’t rush though-the climb up the corporate ladder may be a slow and steady one, but your patience will pay off. Appearing too eager can backfire on you.

In short, if your goal is to become a CEO, start acting like one even if you’re still at the entry level. Always keep learning new skills and new things about your industry. Stay up to date on news and developments in your field. Seize opportunities to challenge yourself and grow. Network constantly and always act professional.  Finely tune your communication and interpersonal skills. If you don’t have an MBA it’s a great idea to get one, but not 100% necessary.
